Selection of Rice Milling Sand Rollers

Rice milling is a processing operation in which rotating mill rollers induce collisions, friction, and tumbling between rice grains and the components of the milling chamber, as well as among the grains themselves. Through mechanisms such as abrasion and frictional stripping, the outer layers of the rice grains are removed—either partially or entirely—producing milled rice that meets specified quality standards. Depending on the material of the mill rollers, common rice mills can be broadly classified into two structural types: sand‑roller mills and iron‑roller mills. Compared with iron‑roller mills, sand‑roller mills offer gentler impact, tumbling, and abrasive action, resulting in lower broken‑rice rates, reduced energy consumption, higher yield, and greater production efficiency. Consequently, sand‑roller mills are currently the most widely used milling equipment in rice-processing enterprises. The sand rollers are critical wear parts that require frequent replacement in sand‑roller mills; moreover, within certain limits, their quality significantly influences key technical and economic performance indicators—including mill output, yield, energy consumption, and broken‑rice rate—as well as the overall economic performance of the enterprise. Enhancing the economic efficiency of rice-processing companies is a topic of shared concern for both rice-processing producers and grain‑processing researchers.
